Working with industry partners as part of a federal government Cooperative Research Centre Project grant, researchers from the University of Sydney's Centre for Internet of Things (IoT) and Telecommunications are developing a novel method to increase soft plastic recycling by developing a smart, automated robotic system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to sort recyclable waste.  


Self-Driving Trucks 

Although it is still in the development stage, autonomous waste pickup is nearing completion. Volvo has been working with Uber for many years on this technology for a self-driving pickup truck. This system is designed to detect a truck maneuvering itself while the operator gets out to collect garbage. Gear shifting, steering, and acceleration are all optimized for low fuel consumption and emissions.

"Our self-driving refuse truck is leading the way in this field globally, and it's one of several exciting autonomous innovations we're working on right now," says Lars Stenqvist, Volvo Group's Chief Technology Officer. Furthermore, Stenqvist claims that this new technology will reduce the risk of occupational injuries.

Robotic Trash Cans

The most significant innovations include robotic wheeled trash cans that roll out on their own at the touch of a button. This advancement in solid waste management is advantageous to those with limited mobility and motor skills.

Another waste management innovation is motorized garbage bins with wheels that drive themselves to the curb. They were programmed to travel from one docking station at a person's home to another at the curb. The creators also include a feature for scheduling the time and day of the neighborhood's trash pickup.
