How AI can be utilized in the hearing aid?


 

In addition to the traditional purpose of boosting sound for the end user, an AI hearing aid is a computational device that can contain functions such as fitness tracking, audio streaming, and translation. Advanced technologies also enable higher-level hearing augmentation capabilities, such as automatically responding to specific sorts of situations and reducing unwanted ambient noise. 



AI refers to computers that can accomplish tasks like human intellect. AI is used by machines that can interpret language, plan, and learn. Machine learning is a method of establishing artificial intelligence in a computer: it essentially involves teaching a computer to learn new things using data and algorithms. When combining AI and hearing technologies, machine learning is essential. 

So, how do hearing aids and artificial intelligence interact? Hearing aids are complicated pieces of equipment that would benefit greatly from a computer that can learn. Bluetooth allows hearing aids to communicate with computers. A computer is used if your hearing aid is linked to your smartphone.  Hearing aids lag behind other businesses in terms of AI incorporation. 

Filtering away background noise while picking up particular speech or noises is one of the most difficult problems of hearing aids. A new Google system may be able to solve that age-old problem soon. Researchers at the IT giant have created a new AI system that can distinguish a speech signal from a slew of other voices and background noises. This form of AI would be a big step forward for hearing technology, allowing persons with hearing loss to hear someone speaking to them much more easily, regardless of the environment. 

Normal hearing aids have the disadvantage of not being able to restore normal hearing because:

  • They enhance all sounds, including background noises, which confuses consumers.
  • Learning to change the settings is more difficult. 


Attempts were made using signal processing to offset the drawback of noise amplification. The voice-activity detector was used to identify the intervals between people's utterances, and the noises in between were labelled as noise. As a result, they attempted to create an algorithm that removes noise from the original recording using this way. This is referred to as spectral subtraction. Unfortunately, this procedure removed either too much or too little noise. With the advancement of artificial intelligence, this problem has been handled on a wide scale. 

The hearing aid was able to differentiate a wide range of noises by utilizing AI capabilities. It can tell the difference between background noise and speech. In other words, it can simulate the brain that would hear the sound if hearing were not disabled.
